Blowgun darts

Postby Pointman » Wed Jun 05, 2013 5:10 am

Made my darts out of 8" of clothes hanger wire. I flattened one end with a hammer until I had a thin spoon, then used my dremel to put a double flat ground edge on each side of the point like a miniature lance. I finished off the point on a whet stone to get a razor sharp edge. I used a butt splice on the other end to add a little weight for more penetration then used yellow duct tape for visibility. I get about 3/4" penetration through 1/2" sheetrock at 20'.

You wouldn't think that a measly little squirrel would have tough hide but when I started pissing them off with the bamboo skewers I realized I needed something a whole lot better. that's when I made the ones with the coat hanger. I tried to get some bicycle spokes to get a little more weight but the local shop went out of business. Still looking. You need the extra weight to get thru the hide and give it a little "knock-down" power. Let's face it, blowguns are not made to take down deer. Mostly birds, lizards and small game like squirrels. I would hesitate to even try it on a rabbit. I'm trying to figure out how to make some bleeder tips.
