Edger blades, like the ones I used for the spear and to make a couple of knives, are already tempered and have a hardness of about 54 which was surprising when I had it tested. I just never let the metal get that blue color and was really careful with the angle grinder so I didn't lose the temper. Just had to keep making short, quick strokes. I also kept a container of water to keep the metal cool as I worked. The rest was file work and sandpaper after the initial cutting out and preliminary grinding on the edge.

If you are gonna try this, just take your time and don't let it get too hot.

Thats great. Most people rush the cut and overheat the blade loosing the temper. The solution is a bit messy but not too difficult to achieve in your back yard.
