Throw in the towel?

Postby Woodsman Wannabe » Tue May 01, 2018 6:58 pm

I know that y'all are way more active than I am, however...

Have you ever looked at the pile-o-gear and just wanted to give it up? A couple years ago I had a fantasy of being able to go camping once in a while. Since I had that idea, I have purchased all new gear (little at a time). Now I am realizing that I am not using it. Beginning to wonder if it was a waste of $$, asking myself if I should just sell it & move on.

There is more to the saga, because it also involves my thoughts as a 'prepper'. Seems like I have collected a lot of gear, but is it really worth it??

I know what you mean.

I'd pare down the gear, keep a basic set of what you think you want for camping, and sell the rest. The more I get out, the more I realize you need less for comfort than what we're spoon fed. ;)

Another technique I've used to keep the gear down is setting a budget. I spend no more than $30 a month on outdoor stuff. Want a BCO tarp? Gotta save up a few months. It keeps you creative as well as getting out to use it more than shopping for new stuff. Works for prepping as well. If you haven't touched it for a year, is it really worth holding on to? Two years?

I have enough gear to outfit at least 6 other people. That does not include the 3 full kits I have for myself and one each for wife, son and daughter.

Hi! I'm saustin1967, I'm a gear junkie.

Going by a prepper mentality, then "Two is One, One is None" can never have enough gear IMHO

"Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it"

Don't give up, eventually the stars will align and you will get into the woods.

2 is 1 and 1 is none is how the pile got started....
I just hope that when the stars align, I'm not too old/fat/out of shape/broken to take advantage....

I am old, fat and out of shape and I have more junk than 10 people need. Well I guess one day Mullet will have it made.

Ha! Old you say?
All that AND, bent, bruised, and bloodied!
May be slower than some, but I'm out there whenever I can make it work!
Gear? Yeah, several redundant items and gobs of STUFF! Now, I'm making kits for others and giving away some.
Gear accumulation is a side effect of the "Plan-Do-Check-Adjust" mentality.

Jeffro, you have to get a halter on Mullet and cut him out of the mare's pasture! Boy's gonna be plumb ruint chasin them fillies!

I find joy in giving my excess gear away. Anytime I find a new "victim" to be a part of this bushcraft scene they inherit my used and extra gear. And I just buy more then give it away. It's a very vicious and expensive loop.

Kind of like a "dealer", give them their first hammock and get them hooked.

Love how bigjesse says victim... Lol. I'm old fat and out of shape as well.. I have made 2 kits one for me and one for the wife my son is working on building his and is constantly trying to swipe some of my gear. Him and me try to get out as much as possible and in the Texas heat it's kind of hard but we still hit Miller springs or chalk ridge every chance we get.
