Davy Crockett NF | 4C Trail Hike | Feb 3-5 2016

Post by BigJesse » Tue Dec 13, 2016 1:23 pm

I've consolidated the info here into one post but left the other up for reference. (here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1238&start=50 )
DEATH MARCH II
4C TRAIL, DAVY CROCKETT NATIONAL FOREST
20 MILE HIKE SPANNING TWO DAYS
FEBRUARY 3-5TH
  • The 4C Trail in the Davy Crockett National Forest is a 20 mile hike.
  • We will be starting our hike at the Ratcliff recreational area and ending at Neches Bluff.
  • We will leave early Friday morning between 0800 and 0900 from Neches Bluff and be shuttled to Ratcliff to start the trek. Most of the hikers will be there Thursday.
  • Expect each leg to take 6 to 7 hours with the first leg ending at Walnut Creek, just over the halfway point.
  • Regardless of where we stop the first night expect to supply your own food and possibly water (water may already be staged).
  • Saturday we will leave even earlier to make it to Camp Curmudgeon which will be set up at Neches Bluff to end our hike with a feast.
  • EXPECT RAIN

If you could please, let us know if you are coming and I'll start adding people to the roster. If I've missed someone from BCUSA or elsewhere let me know below.

If you are not already, now is a good time to become a gram weinie

If you do not need it:
1: to eat
2: to drink
3: to stay warm
4: Extra Socks

Leave it behind.

I will stage water at each 5 mile mark, based on who confirms that they will be hiking.
I will stage a gallon of water at each location. Extra for cooking, etc, will be stage at Walnut creek.
A couple of hundred yards from Walnut creek camp ground there is a wooden shelter. It has a fire ring, I will try to stage some fire wood there also. It will most likely be cooler in the evenings that time of year. For those of us who have less insulation, be prepared.

The first night out will be roughing it. Not survival(that sucks), but not car camping.
While this will not be the heat that we experienced on the first Death March, it will not be a walk in the park.
The first 10 mile (actully closer to 11.5) section is fairly level, a few ups and downs. Will get you used to walking.
The second section is pretty much coming up out of the river bottom, there are a few steep elevation changes.(Up and Down)

We are all Adults, if you carry it in you carry it out.(Or you can leave it on the trail, and I will go back and claim it later)

Just out of curiousity, are we assuming it will rain simply to assume the worst or is there a particular reason to expect rain? I'm new to Texas, so forgive me if there's some rule of thumb I don't know of, like "it ALWAYS rains on the first weekend of February, Kyle you ignorant piece of dump."

When BigJesse is involved ALWAYS expect rain. 5 year, have never camped with him that it did not rain at least a little.

That's why some of us are called the Soggy Bottom Boys.

It's ok Jess, we will endure hail storms and monsoons, and still stand around a fire with you any day.
