Penny stove, hobo stove, canteen cup. What do you use to disinfect water and cook food? Discuss.

water purification

Post by James »

What do you guys use? My set up is cheap and simple, but lacking.

I have a 2 liter coke bottle, sawyer mini and a pathfinder ss bottle. I filter, then boil.

Problem is chemical contaminents. Im always worried about fertilizer, or people dumping grey water in streams that i drink from. So i need something with carbon. I have been thinking about the survival pump filter. It has a small carbon filter and is rated at ..01 micron. Not sure how long the small element will last or if its even effective.

All i use is a Sawyer mini and boiling. I live in farmland so I understand your concerns for chemical contaminants. I just dont worry about it at all. Our city water supply annual report shows concerning levels of mercury, lead, and other nasties, so its not like you can avoid it all anyways.

I have heard lots of good about a platypus gravity filter though, and looked at it before. If im not totally off, i believe it has a carbon element in the filter. Charcoal maybe??

Guess I was wrong on the Platypus.

Apparently works the same way as a Sawyer mini, but only to 0.02 microns. And no carbon element. Sorry for the missinformation.

I have a carbon filter that fits inside the neck of my dirty water bag. It came from one of those Brita bottles.
Works well between the dirty water bag/bottle and the Sawyers filter.

I use a pot still. Spring water makes good mash.

Gravity works makes a small carbon filter that I use in line secondary to my sawyer to "polish" out any chemicals or heavy metals. Cheap insurance and no boiling necessary.
