I'm in the Austin area and looking for places close by to practice new bushcraft skills.

Unfortunately, CLOSE and Texas don't go together.

I know that's right! We used to live in McKinney and had a weekend guest come in from Boston ask if we could make a quick trip to the beach because they heard South Padre was nice.

You're going to have to come up to hill country. I'm still figuring it all out myself but there are quite a few cool parks south of you for hikes and camping and such. Make friends with ranchers is another good tip, got a friend in Bastrop that has land he'll let me do anything I want on if needed. Also I can just "go out back" which is an advantage being further out in the country, we are not sure who owns the land but nobody minds just about anything. Another tip is the lakes and the rivers around. Lots of water activities of central Texas of all kinds.
