Sayings in the bushcraft community

Post by Cody_Gene »

Howdy everyone,

Perhaps this is a goofy question, but let’s have fun; what is the common vernacular/sayings in the bushcraft community?

For example, I tell people I hang out “in the bush” (I’m sure this is going to set me up for a sex pun from “that guy” in the office)

I haven’t met any other people in my area so I’m not sure. Would like to hear any sayings or opinions from others.

*disclosure*

I’m aware that we don’t need to use any specific sayings or phrases to be authentic, or even to look like we know what we’re doing. Bushcraft is unique to everyone and their unique pace of learning. With that said, let’s hear them.

One of my favorite "survival celebrity" is Les Stroud. He has a couple catch phrases that I guess could fit well in this thread.

"You sweat, you die" and "if you don't have to run, walk. If you don't have to walk, stand. If you don't have to stand, lie down. If you don't have to be awake, sleep."

The first one is obvious, don't over heat or sweat so much you freeze to death later. The second one is about conserving energy, being efficient which I think is a very important one.

Slow is Smooth, Smooth is fast.
Applies to most things - to get good at anything you must first start out slow, build the muscle memory. Whether it is brain muscle or physical muscle.
